Boleyn
Brand Identity

Boleyn is a musical theatre project currently in development by an accomplished singer/songwriter in New York City. Boleyn needed a comprehensive visual identity to define the musical's poster, website, and all other marketing collateral. The story of Anne Boleyn—one of England's most famous (and infamous) Queens—is set in the 16th century, but Boleyn’s music spans contemporary genres; therefore, a key challenge was to reference the historical time period, but with a contemporary aesthetic. The design also needed to convey a tale of love and betrayal centered around a woman who was far ahead of her time: independent, strong willed, ambitious, highly intelligent, and a wit that was a match for a king.

LT Design created a visual identity with a conceptual illustration that ties together historical elements to create an iconic and memorable image. We identified key themes and images to communicate the essence of the story: The silhouette of Anne Boleyn has a strong central presence, and her slightly upward tilted head represents her ambition. Anne’s hair flowing loose behind her head signifies Anne’s strength, movement, and rebellion. The image inside the silhouette is an abstraction of the Tudor rose, and has been rendered in the style of stained glass: The black lines break apart the silhouette, subtly hinting at Anne’s eventual demise - as does the blood-red color of the rose. The rose also symbolizes the romance between Anne and Henry: Anne is beautiful and alluring like a rose, but is also powerful and dangerous, like the thorns of a rose. The stone texture gives the artwork a dramatic tone and evokes the walls of the Tower of London.

The design will be rolled out across printed collateral, a website, digital marketing, and social media.
